The “Art” Of Beauty

10.22.06

Here’s an interesting little reminder that even supermodels don’t look like supermodels.

See the high resolution movie and an interactive “before and after” at campaignforrealbeauty.ca

Quoting one of the commenters on the video: “I don’t use Dove and never will - I’m a guy. However, anything that encourages young women to think of themselves as whole people instead of plastic models should be supported.”

One of Google’s worst fears!

07.09.06

One of Google’s worst fears may have been realised. The latest edition of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary includes the word “google” which means to use the well-known search engine to look for information on the web. The entry means that in addition to being a proper noun, the word “google” - without capitalisation of the “g” - is now a common transitive verb.

To quote Google: “We also face risks associated with our trademarks. For example, there is a risk that the word ‘Google’ could become so commonly used that it becomes synonymous with the word ’search’. If this happens, we could lose protection for this trademark, which could result in other people using the word ‘Google’ to refer to their own products, thus diminishing our brand.”

Personally, I think that if the word “google” indeed becomes a word of all dictionaries as a verb, I think it should be kept as a trademark for Google because they deserve keeping the trademark they created and became so widely used all over the world, I think it just proves how successful Google are.

People don’t quit organizations; People leave bad managers!!

04.30.06

Are you fed up with your manager, boss, supervisor or your company rules?!
Do you agree with a big chunk of people that a bad boss is the main reason of why an employee quit his job looking for another anonymous chance, a chance which may hold inside another worse situation, who knows?

Most people wait for their promotion as to breathe & exhale widely when they reach management level in their careers because they would no longer report to a small manager any more. A manager reports to a director or a VP in most corporate structures. Let’s wish they don’t convert either to a bad personality & start a bad attitude against their staff underneath their responsibility.

I am currently working as a Senior Network Engineer and from my personal experience in Dubai since year 2000, I have seen many cases where employees quit their jobs as to change their company for a less pay only to get rid of their bad boss, who made his life a hell.

Another case where a bad boss refused to accept someone’s resignation because he knew that he has got quad the salary offer from another company, although that manager knows that he is underestimated in his current pay and position & that he deserves the new position. Finally, he ruined the life of my friend & he fired him after letting that golden chance goes from him, ending him with leaving Dubai and going back to Jordan. The bad thing here is that this manager is from Jordan also & he knows that the victim employee is the only family member who works & that he is responsible financially about his brothers & parents.

For me, thank god, I am currently not facing any difficulties of that kind anymore as the atmosphere in my department is warm & friendly. I will not write about my personal past experiences as everybody should turn the page with optimism, they werent that bad but we live and see. To be frankly, I cannot handle a bad boss for 5 days -didn’t want to say 5 minutes or seconds- after raising my patience level to 1000%. :)

Conclusion, I think whatever person is happy or not with his current boss or company atmosphere, the best for someone is to be his own boss. This subject is fragile. Why? Because it needs to be calculated very well. I still remember a story I heard from one Multinational IT Director here in Dubai, telling me about his friend, who was a regional manager and planned to have his own business in Amman. The man resigned from his position and invested all his savings & was finally in the street after 1 year walking like a hopeless, even without his car which he sold it. He lost his position, his money & he failed. That is an exception of course, I wish everybody the success in their career or self employment.

The video below shows someone’s idea of punishment for his bad boss!!

Funny Cartoons!

I am positive this could happen to many people :) Female voice can be misleading sometimes

HowCan.Gif

Sadly, I think this is today’s trend. Nowadays, people like to hear what they want rather than what they should.

headshaving.jpgBe careful about what you read online, we should think twice before we approve anything we read on the internet. Since 1998, I think I’ve received “the hotmail users Hoax” email for more than 100 times & it is obviously still being forwarded up until now. (If you don’t forward the email to 15 of your contacts, your hotmail account will be deleted :))

The Ultimate “Winning Eleven” PlayStation Tournament!

04.10.06

winning11.jpg

For those of you who aren’t quite Video Game fans, “Winning Eleven” is a popular soccer video game for Sony’s Playstation 2, that is widely played in Jordan. Just when you thought that video games hype that was caused by Counter Strike in Jordan the last few years was over, while I might be exaggerating about it, comes this “Winning Eleven” tournament sponsored by Play 99.6 held in Marriott Hotel sometime soon I guess :/ (the tournament registration page doesn’t mention neither a date or time) So anyways, if you think you’re a good Winning Eleven player, then you shouldn’t think twice about joining up this competetion, I know I wouldn’t but I’m a fifa fan and Winning Eleven just won’t do it for me. :)

Now all you need to do to is find a good Winning Eleven friend to play on your team, then follow this link to Play 99.6’s website and submit your information.

Becoming a Jet Fighter Pilot

03.30.06

In the early 90’s I could swear that 80% of the Jordanian guys wanted to be Air Force pilots, join the Air Forces fly an F-16 or any jet fighter plane to defend the country or any other reason they have . It is strange how we used to grow to love that job, we always admire Air Force pilots and consider them as cool person. I never forgot the first time I watched Top Gun, I guess this movie had a big effect on the guys at that period that is why all wanted to become Jordanian Maverick’s and get all the cute girls the money and fly a jet plane, what more a guy would need back then. Being a jet fighter is very cool but not easy, lot of focus, well, dedication and most important loyality to your country. To be honest, Jordanian Air Force fighters proved more than once how good they are and that they are the in top of Arab countries. It is different today, you can hardly see a kid who is interested in joining the air force and become a fighter for his country or even join the Army, I wonder why? Is it because today’s Ideology has changed, or because what they show on TV is different than what we used to see. Or……
I guess the Army needs to do a campaign so that young people know what a privilege is it to work in there……

The good and bad of Xbox 360

12.07.05

Xbox 360

The good: All games in high-definition; excellent user-friendly Dashboard interface; built-in support for wireless controllers; excellent online gaming and communications via Xbox Live; backward compatible with many (but not all) original Xbox titles; doubles as superior digital media hub and Windows Media extender; $399 Xbox 360 bundle includes key accessories.

The bad: First wave of Xbox 360 games is somewhat anemic; noisy exhaust fan; no built-in wireless networking; only three USB ports; no support for next-gen HD movie discs; no DVI or HDMI output; doesn’t upscale DVDs to HD resolution; gigantic oversize power supply; price will almost certainly drop.

The bottom line: While it’s missing a couple of potentially important features at launch, the Xbox 360 delivers the power and performance of a high-end gaming PC, including impressive digital media and networking features.

My opinion: Speaking as an Xbox owner, while Xbox 360 is definitely a great gaming console and has some cool features originally available in Windows Media Center OS, I don’t think it brings too much over the first Xbox, game-wise and graphic-wise, you’re not going to feel much improvement in the graphics unless you have an HDTV, or so I read. Not to mention that there’s not so many games out for it yet. Perhaps, I should keep my Xbox and get a PS3 when it’s released for a change, either way I’m going to wait until PS3 is released to judge.

Driving in Jordan

11.15.05

You often see drivers 40 kilometers over the speed limit, you often see drivers doing “betweens” as if they’re in a race. You often see people driving in the middle of the street as if we’re supposed to center the car on the street middle lines. You often see trucks and buses driving on the speed lane where they shouldn’t. You often see people NOT using you their blinkers when they should be. However, you often see people using their blinkers when they are asking for permission to do something wrong, usually with a hand figure out of the window. You often see drivers NOT yielding for other cars and considering it an insult if they somehow happened to yield by mistake, and what makes it even more sad is that I can bet that very few of us reading this think i’m exaggerating, if any at all. And the list continues…

Welcome to driving in Jordan ladies and gentlemen.

Driving in Jordan

Earlier today I got some images that I thought I’d share with you of “the remains” of an accident that happened on “Dowwar El Kilo” also known as “Dowwar El 7aramain”, that is said in the email to have happened a few days ago. Now, before you go see the photos I’d like to say that if everyone just thinks about how hard it is for us to change our driving habits on the road, and actually try to change it, you’ll be surprised. For first, you’re only going to get where-ever you’re going to a couple of minutes earlier with all the speeding, “betweens” and rulebreaking. Remember, that change starts with you, and that if no one ever changes himself first, we’ll be stuck up with the same habits 20 years later.

God Bless Jordan and all Jordanians.
