11.28.06

Who has controlled the Middle East over the course of history? The flash movie/map below sums it up. I have not tried to confirm the accuracy of the historical timelines, but I like the visual way it presents the data.

Mama Said and….

03.04.06

Something I thought I’d share with you today, and something that I bet no one saw coming, is to see a metal song’s lyrics for Metallica, on a Jordanian newspaper. See it for yourself! I was surprised to find “Mama Said” lyrics for Metallica on Al Ghad today and I thought it was pretty cool that someone at Al Ghad newspaper is a fan of Metallica! :D

Also, going off topic, take a look at this image showing a bathroom with such a weird and scary idea of bath floor. Though it’s obviously photoshoped!

King swears in new gov’t

11.28.05

After less than 8 months of Adnan Badran’s goverment being formed…

Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit and his 23-member Cabinet — mandated with political and socio-economic reform as well as a tougher anti-terror fight — were sworn-in Sunday before His Majesty King Abdullah.

Also Sunday, a Royal Decree summoned Parliament to convene in an ordinary session on Thursday, December 1st.

The two events set the stage for long-awaited action by the executive and legislature on advancing the country’s democratic process and energising its economy.

The new government, as constitutionally stipulated, will first have to seek a vote of confidence by the 110-member Parliament, which has been on a summer recess.

The Cabinet, a mixture of technocrats and politicians, includes nine ministers who served in the former Cabinet of Adnan Badran, four public figures who previously held ministerial posts and 10 newcomers representing public and private sector as well as the civil service.

Key appointments indicate that the government’s list of priorities entail overhauling the public sector and pushing forth with the country’s National Agenda, that is to set the course for the Kingdom for the next 10 years.

It is also seen as one that will protect the country from terror attacks, in the wake of the November 9 triple bombings that rocked Amman and killed 60 people.

“The evil terrorist attacks on our beloved capital Amman will increase our determination to move forward in our preemptive war against terrorism and the culture of apostasy,” Bakhit, 58, said in a letter to the King following the swearing-in ceremony.

Zarqawi’s family in Jordan disowns him

11.21.05

The family and tribe of al-Qaida leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, disowned him Sunday in a large newspaper advertisement.

Local Jordanian newspapers published a large advertised statement addressed to King Abdullah II and signed by 76 members of the Khalayleh family of the prominent Bani Hassan clan, from which Zarqawi hails.

The statement, which included the signature of Zarqawi’s brother, Sayel Fadeel Nazzal Khalayleh, and his cousins, pledged allegiance to the Jordanian monarch and denounced “all terrorist acts claimed by Ahmad Fadeel Khalayleh,” Zarqawi’s real name.

It added the Khalayleh family renounces him, his acts and statements, insisting that “anyone who dares to carry out such acts against our Jordan has no links to Jordan and did not drink from its water; therefore, we disown him until the day of judgment.”

The statement came two days after an audio-tape attributed to Zarqawi’s voice on an Islamic website threatened to strike against Jordan and its king again, warning Muslims against going to “immoral hotels,” foreign embassies and military installations.

Zarqawi’s al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility for suicide attacks in three Amman hotels on Nov. 9 that killed 59 people and injured 100 others.

Zarqawi’s Bani Hassan clan, one of the largest Jordanian tribes, disowned him two years ago as he was being tried in absentia for terror-related activities in the kingdom, in which he was sentenced to death.

Jordanians disowned him, his own family disowned him, it’s time for the rest of the world to wake up and disown him as well, and that by refusing all forms of terrorism. Do NOT wait until terrorism hits your life, do NOT think it’s too far from possible, I know some Jordanians thought it was, but I believe most Jordanians are now convinced that we have to fight back terrorism.

Mother of bride in Jordan hotel blasts dies

11.18.05

The mother of the bride, whose wedding was devastated in the Amman suicide bombings, died of her wounds in a coma on Thursday.

Hala al-Faroukah died due to severe injuries to her spinal cord, which stopped her respiratory system from functioning, said a doctor at Amman Surgical Hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity. She was in her late 50s.

Her death brings the number of people killed in the November 9 attacks at three Amman hotels to 62, including the three bombers. Al Qaeda in Iraq, the terror group led by the Jordanian-born Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Al-Faroukah was wounded in the attack at the Radisson SAS hotel where an Iraqi, identified as Ali Hussein Ali al-Shamari, walked into the ballroom during a wedding party and detonated a belt of explosives. The blast killed her husband, Khaled al-Alami, immediately, and caused the greatest number of casualties of the three hotel bombings.

The bride and groom, Ashraf and Nadia Akhras, survived the explosion without injury. But 17 relatives of Ashraf were killed, including his father, and Nadia lost 11 family members, including her parents.

Ashraf Akhras said Thursday that al-Faroukah had been in a coma since she was admitted to the hospital shortly after the attack.

She died at dawn Thursday, he told The Associated Press. He and his wife had visited her in the hospital Wednesday night.

The Radisson hotel bomber’s wife, Sajida Mubarak Atrous al-Rishawi, was arrested Sunday. She confessed on television that she tried to detonate her own explosives belt, but it failed and she fled the scene.
